Cursor at a glance: the AI-native editor that became a $60B bet
Cursor is the AI coding editor built by Anysphere, a four-person team of MIT graduates who turned a fork of VS Code into the fastest-growing developer tools company of the decade. Cursor vs GitHub Copilot
Copilot is the default path for any team already on Microsoft tools. GitHub says Copilot had 26M+ users as of October 2025, and per Wikipedia it now supports multiple LLMs including OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, and xAI. The plugin sits inside VS Code, Visual Studio, Neovim, JetBrains, and Eclipse.
Cursor wins on agent depth, repo-wide retrieval, and the speed of its multi-agent harnesses. Copilot wins on ecosystem ubiquity and zero migration cost. For an org that standardized on Microsoft tooling years ago, Copilot is the rational default. For a team that wants one workspace for everything agentic, Cursor pulls ahead.
Cursor vs Claude Code
Claude Code is Anthropic’s terminal-native agent, released February 2025 and reaching $2.5B+ in run-rate revenue by February 2026, per CNBC. Controversies and limits worth knowing
Two incidents shaped Cursor’s reputation in 2025.
In April 2025, an AI help-desk agent named “Sam” invented a non-existent login policy, triggering user cancellations before staff apologized and issued refunds. The episode is a good reminder that any AI agent that talks to customers needs the same guardrails as a junior employee.
In July 2025, Cursor changed the Pro plan from a 500-requests cap to a usage-metered cap. Users complained about unexpected charges, per TechCrunch. Cursor apologized, rolled back the limits, and refunded affected customers.
